Caring For Leather Sofa Beds
When you buy a leather sofa you know that it's going to last you a long time and it's the same with leather sofa beds. Unlike fabric, that gets dirty very easily and begins to wear thing after a while, leather just keeps going.
Leather is a far more forgiving surface than fabric. Spill a drink on a fabric covered sofa and you'll end up with a stain if you're not careful and a damp patch. Do the same thing on a leather sofa bed and you just get a cloth and mop it up. No stain and no damp patch to avoid sitting on for awhile.
However although leather is durable and easy to clean it still needs proper care. If you have spilt your red wine on your leather sofa bed then yes all you need to do is wipe it up. However if you've let the leather become dry then you do need to wipe up reasonably promptly especially if the leather is light colour. If you don't the wine will soak into the dry leather like a sponge and a red stain on a beige sofa will be very noticeable and difficult to get rid of.
So keeping the leather of sofa beds from drying out is important. Not only is dry leather more likely stain but it will also absorb the oils from you hair leading to a dark patch where your head rests on the sofa. Also if allowed to get dry the leather itself will start to crack.
To keep leather sofa beds looking good use a leather conditioner once or twice a year. This will help the leather retain the necessary moisture it needs to stay supple.
You may want to wash your sofa down from time to time to get rid of general dirt and grim that might be coating the surface. To do this use a damp cloth that's been dipped in mild, warm water with a little bit of wool detergent added. Make sure it's a damp not wet cloth otherwise you'll end up with annoy water marks over the leather which you'll have to buff off later. If you wash your sofa down before conditioning it, make sure it's properly dry first before apply the conditioner.
You may occasionally want to give certain areas an extra wipe down. Again a damp cloth will do but some people like to use baby wipes. These are fine to use on an occasional basis but may take out the colour on cheaper leather sofa beds. Don't use milk as suggested by some people. All it will do is make your sofa smell.
And as for the bed part of leather sofa beds there is very little maintenance to be done though if you have a pull out, a little application of light oil should keep the action smooth and less likely to creak.
